[Michael Palin:] Eric’s sketch – very funny. Eric very, very good on the verbal stuff, he sort of did a little play on words, very nice. Very funny that. ‘Course you couldn’t do that a few years later, we just couldn’t do that at all, now of course you couldn’t do it.
It’s one of those things when you look back at the sketches, you realize how times have changed, I mean, like the way we look for a start, you know: huge sideburns I’ve got most of time. Normally you would’ve put those on, you know [laughs] - specially put on to play a Victorian character, and this was the ’60s when we all wore this thick hair everywhere! We all got bunches of hair out the back and sort of tucked up under our hats. I mean, my enormous sideburns! Quite gigantic! I didn’t have those cut off until I did Three Men in a Boat in 1976*, because I thought I would look, you know - I’d lose my beauty!
